Authentic Kruger Camping Experience

This is a self-catering itinerary, however, the Kruger National Park has shops at all the camps should you wish to prepare your own meals, or there are restaurants, should you wish to dine out.

When booking the self-drive option through PrimaLuce Tours & Safaris, we will give you a fully comprehensive info pack on recommended times for game drives, which are the best roads to follow, where the game viewing hotspots are, and what to look out for. It is like having ‘a guide in your pocket’.

Camping is sometimes viewed as an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience but there is no need to worry about that when camping our recommended way. You will have the comfort of sleeping on a mattress in a roof-top tent which is super easy to set up as you simply have to open the concertinas of the tent. The ablutions in all the camp sites are well equipped and kept sparkling clean by the Kruger staff. Camping really is a unique way of travelling, and it gets you much closer to nature, as when you are in your tent at night, you can hear the sounds of the African Bush so much clearer than if you were in a chalet. This makes you really feel like you are in the open bush, yet you are safely behind an electrified fence.

We do also have the option for you to have an experienced guide travel with you, and do all the setting up for you, prepare your meals and take you on 2 game drives per day. Please enquire about this fully inclusive option should you not wish to do the self-drive option.

The itinerary will run as follows:

  • Self-drive from Johannesburg to The Kruger National Park in your Toyota 4WD complete with 1 Roof Top Tent

  • This model features a roof rack complete with a 2 person roof top tent. This double tent is so easy to use and simply concertinas open.

  • It is complete with a deep foam mattress sleeping bags, pillows, towels and sheets.

Day 1 & 2

Enter the Kruger National Park at Paul Kruger Gate and enjoy a late lunch at Skukuza. You can either make your lunch with supplies from the well-stocked camp shop or enjoy a lovely lunch from the take away or relax on the deck and have lunch served to you from the restaurant. The deck has stunning views of the Sabie River. Travel along the H4-1 to Lower Sabie. This takes approximately 2 hours at game viewing speed, along arguably the best road in the south of the park. The road follows the Sabie River and game viewing potential is fantastic.

Arrive in time to set up your camp site. Enjoy a relaxing evening around the camp fire, or dinner at the restaurant on the deck. The camp has a swimming pool where you can relax during the day. You will spend you first two nights here. There are excellent routes to explore in and around Lower Sabie, which will be given to you in your info pack. On the morning of Day 2, will go on a 3-4 hour guided Kruger National Park bushwalk.

Day 3 & 4

Travel back along the H4-1, stopping at Nkuhlu Picnic Site or Skukuza for breakfast. Then follow the H1-3, up to Satara Camp, where you will spend the next two nights. There is a lovely picnic site with a shop and take away section en-route to Satara called Tshokwane, which is the perfect stopping point for a leg stretch and some lunch. Stop off to view the famous Kruger Baobab Tree which is believed to be over 1000 years old.

Satara camp has such a magical feel to it, as the landscape around the camp is vast and open and it is set in the middle of the open bushveld. At night you will get many animal visitors coming past the camp, and you will be able to view them from the safety of being behind a fence. Satara has a delightful swimming pool area where you can relax during the day. The area is very well known for its Big 5 sightings especially lion, leopard and South Africa’s other big cat, the cheetah. On the second night at Satara, have an early dinner at the camp restaurant and then you will go on a guided Kruger National Park night drive, which gives you an opportunity to view the nocturnal animals, you don’t usually get to see during the day on your self-drives.

Day 5 & 6

Travel up to Letaba, along the H1-4 where the road is elevated and you can see for miles out into the vast open landscapes. Game viewing and bird watching along this road is excellent. Keep an eye out for Elephants browsing on the trees and our bigger birds such as Ostrich, Kori Bustard and the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill.

Stop for breakfast the restaurant at Oilfants camp, which is set high up on a granite koppie with spectacular views of the Olifants River. Then follow the H1-5, which follows the Letaba River, where many an animal and bird can be spotted in and around the river bed. Arrive at Letaba Camp in time for some lunch and to choose your campsite. Letaba Camp also has a restaurant overlooking the river and a very well stocked shop for supplies. The swimming pool area is nicely shaded and the perfect place to relax between game drives. The Letaba Camp also has an Elephant Hall Museum. The museum covers elephant evolution, biology, behaviour, ecology and research. It also showcases the ivory of eight of Kruger's greatest tuskers (including six of the Magnificent Seven). You will spend your last two nights here. On your last evening, you will go on a guided Kruger National Park sunset drive. You will get back to camp at around 7:30pm, when you can enjoy a relaxing evening around the camp fire and a traditional South African braai (you can get  supplies from the camp shop before you go out on your game drive).
