When booking the self-drive option through PrimaLuce Tours & Safaris, we will give you a fully comprehensive info pack on recommended times for game drives, which are the best roads to follow, where the game viewing hotspots are, and what to look out for. It is like having ‘a guide in your pocket’.

Accommodation will be in comfortable air-conditioned chalets, fitted with a kitchenette and all the necessary equipment you will need for self-catering.

We do also have the option for you to have an experienced guide travel with you, prepare your meals and take you on 2 game drives per day. Please enquire about this fully inclusive option should you not wish to do the self-drive option.

The itinerary can run two ways:

  • Self-drive to The Kruger National Park in your own vehicle

  • Fly into Skukuza Airport, Kruger National Park, where you will collect your rental car

Day 1

Arrive in the Kruger National Park and travel north up to Satara. Follow the H1-3, up to Satara Camp, where you will spend your first night.

There is a lovely picnic site with a shop and take away section en-route to Satara called Tshokwane, which is the perfect stopping point for a leg stretch and some lunch.

Stop off to view the famous Kruger Baobab Tree which is believed to be over 1000 years old.

Satara camp has such a magical feel to it, as the landscape around the camp is vast and open and it is set in the middle of the open bushveld.

Check in to your chalet any time from 2pm. At night you will get many animal visitors coming past the camp, and you will be able to view them from the safety of being behind a fence.

Satara has a delightful swimming pool area where you can relax during the day. The area is very well known for its Big 5 sightings especially lion, leopard and South Africa’s other big cat, the cheetah.

Day 2

Wake up for an early morning bush walk at Satara. This will be a 3-4 hour walk, after which you can come back to camp and enjoy a hearty breakfast

Travel up to Olifants Camp (where you will spend the next two nights) along the H1-4 where the road is elevated and you can see for miles out into the vast open landscapes. Game viewing and bird watching along this road is excellent. Keep an eye out for Elephants browsing on the trees and our bigger birds such as Ostrich, Kori Bustard and the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill.

Check in to your chalet any time after 2pm.

Day 3

Wake up for an early morning mountain bike safari. You will do a 3-4 hour cycle in a Big 5 area with an experienced guide.

Return to camp and enjoy a hearty breakfast.

After breakfast a visit to the Elephant Hall Museum at Letaba Camp is highly recommended. The museum covers elephant evolution, biology, behaviour, ecology and research. It also showcases the ivory of eight of Kruger's greatest tuskers (including six of the Magnificent Seven).

The Letaba Camp is a 32km/1,5hrs drive along the H1-5, which follows the Letaba River, where many an animal and bird can be spotted in and around the river bed. Arrive at Letaba Camp in time for a late lunch. Letaba Camp also has a restaurant overlooking the river. Take a leisurely drive back to Oilfants and enjoy your evening around the camp fire or at the restaurant.

Day 4

Wake up for your last early morning mountain bike safari. Again you will do a 3-4 hour cycle in a Big 5 area with an experienced guide, after which you can come back to camp and enjoy your well-earned breakfast.

Travel back down to Satara for your last night in the park. Tonight, enjoy a night drive at Satara, where you will get a chance to see the nocturnal animals one does usually not get a chance to see during the day eg: Leopard, Spotted Genet Cat, African Civet, Bush Babies and many more.

Day 5

Enjoy you last morning in the park on your self-drive safari, either travelling back down to Skukuza, to return your rental car; or to self-drive out of the park.
